Chico Velasquez was a leader associated with both the Jicarilla Apache and Ute peoples. Initially involved in conflicts with American settlers, he later worked with U.S. authorities to recover stolen livestock. Tragically, he died in 1854 from smallpox, contracted from infected goods provided by the U.S. government, an event that contributed to tensions leading to the Fort Pueblo Massacre.
