Mixed media on stretched canvas with wooden frame
Original signed painting by Sonny and Lisa Moeckel
This painting is a vivid portrayal of horses galloping through a burst of vibrant colors. You can feel their energy as they move with one another in stride. As an Indigenous Artist (Jicarilla Apache and Navajo), born and raised on the Navajo reservation, horses are important to our culture as they represent freedom, power, and connection with nature.
We are a married artist duo who paint collaboratively on the same canvas by combining our abstract and realistic styles to create expressionist paintings. We hope this piece energizes and liberates the viewer through the painterly lines and vivid colors that the horses are immersed in. This piece hangs horizontally and would fit perfectly above a bed, a fireplace, or in to brighten up your space. The horses portray the balance between nature and humanity, and the desire to live together in harmony. We allow the painterly lines, brush strokes, and strokes of palette knives to show through in our work to display our process.
After we met, we worked together on a ranch, further deepening our love for horses and animals.
Our works express the balance between reality and distortion. When looking closely you can
see each individual stroke of paint working together in unison to complete the picture.
