“Gouyen”

8” by 10”

Mixed media on stretched canvas with gold floating frame

Original signed painting by Sonny and Lisa Moeckel

While Gouyen was from the Chiricahua Apache, she is often associated with the broader Apache identity, including Jicarilla kinship ties. Her story resonates with all Apache groups. After her husband was killed by a Comanche warrior, she tracked the man, infiltrated his victory dance, killed him, and scalped him—restoring her family's honor. She later joined Geronimo's band and fought in Apache resistance campaigns.
