“Red River”
24” by 30”
Oil on Canvas
Original signed painting by Sonny and Lisa Moeckel
Chief Red Cloud (1822–1909) was a prominent leader of the Oglala Lakota Sioux, a Plains tribe primarily based in what is now South Dakota, Nebraska, and Wyoming. He is best known for leading Red Cloud's War (1866–1868) against the United States, successfully resisting U.S. military presence in the Powder River Country. While Red Cloud and the Jicarilla Apache weren’t directly related, there were occasional alliances or mutual interests among different tribes, especially in opposition to U.S. expansion.
