As an Indigenous Artist (Jicarilla Apache and Navajo), born and raised on the Navajo reservation, this painting represents the "Water is Life" belief. This is integral to Native American cultures, with "Mní Wičóni" being a powerful mantra for the Indigenous people. For many Native American tribes, water is not only crucial for survival but also considered sacred, with deep spiritual significance. Growing up on the Navajo reservation, I saw this concept in action. We would travel to the watering tank to gather water as many homes didn't and still don't have running water. This experience instilled in me an appreciation for the value and power of water. This "Water is Life "series explores the spiritual connection between us and our relationship with water.
Nearly reaching the surface, she submerges in vivid hues, her face serene as the water reflects a fiery sky, merging tranquility with intensity. This painting is a vibrant depiction of a woman's face immersed in water, with her hair and beautiful face one with the colors of the ocean. The hues of her face blend fluidly evoking emotions of serene tranquility. The water ripples as she is just beneath the surface. This painting portrays the feeling of being underwater and taking in a deep breath as the subject does in perfect peace and serenity.
We are a married artist duo who paint collaboratively on the same canvas by combining our abstract and realistic styles to create expressionist paintings. We hope this piece resonates with the viewer through the painterly lines and vivid colors that the woman is immersed in. We allow the painterly lines, brush strokes, and strokes of palette knives to show through in our work to display our process. This piece is a square painting that would look great in an entry way, living room, above a couch, or to brighten up any space.
Our works express the balance between reality and distortion. When looking closely you can
see each individual stroke of paint working together in unison to complete the picture.
